As someone who always had dozens of Twinkies lying around, especially around my birthday when I would make cakes from hundreds and hundreds of them, I am elated to see an alternative to the loss I mourned all day yesterday. There still is nothing better than the real thing but I for one will be spending this holiday season cloning the world’s greatest snack, now but a mere yellow and fuzzy memory.

Tho i have not partaken of the wonderfulness of a Twinkie in many years, i too will miss them…and some of the other Hostess goodies. The loss of the Twinkie is not as great as the loss of the inimitable Hubig’s Pie though. I must make a post with the picture i took of the Hubig’s plant before it burned down in New Orleans during the summer. When i heard the news of that, i immediately got over to the neighborhood grocery to find they were all sold out already as were the gas stations and everywhere else they were sold. Hubig’s has said they will rebuild and reopen and we all look forward to that day.

Don’t know Hubig’s…

Check out http://www.hubigs.com when you have the time. Hubig’s are/were fried turnover pies that came in many fruit filled flavors, usually using local products as strawberry, blueberry, lemon my favorite, sweet potato, chocolate, etc. Very good treats and greatly missed til they get up and running again.

Totally my kind of place! And pies I’m sure!

I”m not so sure that these should be cloned…I’m sad they have shut down for the sake of those losing their jobs but were any of their products really edible!? I think I tasted a cupcake and twinkie once in the 80s and that was enough for me…They weren’t even yummy! But yeah, blaming the unions for this shutdown is also pretty shady too…
