Booze-O-Meter

This is a Booze-O-Meter that is plastic and cost a nickel to play.   It would be found in bars and motels.  You take the little wooden handle rod and try to get from one side to the other without hitting the metal — the metal would make a flashing light go on and indicate how drunk you were.

I always used to see these when I was young. I never really drank, just a bloody Mary now and then because it tastes like a salad. But I always wanted one of these nonetheless. I never had great coordination either so there’s no way that I could have moved that handle very far without touching the rod, which is how this booze test works. Really one of the stupidest things ever but such an excellent artifact and timepiece.

Its a great piece of kitsch, for sure! I’m with you – bloody Marys for the olives and celery.
