Actually, Wikipedia says this, and you can’t make this stuff up:

“Spotted dick is an English steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants) commonly served with custard. Spotted refers to the dried fruit (which resemble spots) and dick may be a contraction or corruption of the word pudding (from the last syllable) or possibly a corruption of the word dough[1] or dog, as “spotted dog” is another name for the same dish with the use of plums rather than currants. Another explanation offered for the word “dick” is that it comes from the German word for “thick” or dick.”

    The name of this foodstuff has always astounded me. Whoever would put something named this in their mouth, well at least if they were looking for sustinance from an actual food product?? The contents make it sound way too much like fruitcake for me anyway.

    Has anyone reading this ever tasted (edible) spotted dick?

      I tried it before when somebody bought me a can of this stuff as a gag gift. It wasn’t half bad, not really my taste, though. I wanna say.. like gooey sponge cake? But I’m sure it’s much better fresh than tinned.

    Lol..I just spotted this (pardon the pun) being from the UK I ate loads of this as a child, usually with a white custard ! Other flavours were Chocolate Steamed pudding, and a Jam topped sponge, and my favourite treacle sponge pudding. They were fraught with difficulty when cooking as you could not let the pan boil dry, then when you opened them the jam/sauce topping always stuck to the tin.
    Spotted Dick was also a one of the most popular puddings at school in the late 60’s early 70’s along with Jam Roly Poly.

    Shirlie when I posted this I thought you’d respond because it’s a Brit thing, then I forgot about it! Jam Roly Poly sounds interesting, what is it? Do you know how it came to have it’s name?
