This red and blue truck, “City of Toyland, No. 7, Utility Truck”, was made by Structo in the 1950’s and is 21 inches long. The hopper at the rear lifts the trash to a door that slides open allowing the load to be dumped.
In the “old” days there was a certain majesty and appreciation for most things, even a garbage truck, and children used their imaginations and played with toys that held their attention before the electronic age abducted them.

I absolutely love this truck. Hints of streamline 1930’s as well as 1950’s. And the fact that it actually can dump whatever’s in the back is fantastic.
Growing up in a junkyard I’m naturally interested in anything that gets dumped out of garbage trucks as people are so stupid in what they throw away. Some of the biggest treasures in my collection have been found on garbage collection day.
I agree with what you say about kids really missing out on something by not playing with these kind of toys anymore. As someone who was abducted by the electronic age long before most people I know, I think there’s a real danger in only living life on that plane and not participating in the more na√Øve, tactile plane that this truck sprung out of. I think the planet will pay the price for kids these days missing out on this type of experience.

I love the truck, I actually have an old dump truck similar to this in the basement that has no tires on it, and is all rust that my dearly departed father in law played with when he was a kid, I keep thinking I’ll try to figure out how to restore it.
