There is an abundance of fabulous barware at “Willis Wonderland” to the point where it’s like “where do you start”? There is some kitsch that I feel deserves a post dedicated to that one item only. I came across this coaster set near the mosaic bar (that will pop up later here) that it sits on top of. There are 6 plastic discs that resemble vinyl lp’s.
I love it that it’s housed in a gatefold type sleeve with individual sleeves for each coaster.
I do want to know how Allee acquired this set. I came across another one that is currently in storage.
Made in 1963.

I have about 10 of these record coaster sets. This particular one has all different kinds of records in them. The one that you show here from Cosmopolitan isn’t one that came with it as this cover contains all of the strays. I know there’s some from a Freda Payne LP that came out in the 70s as well as from Desmond Child in the 80s. The other sets I have, all of which have solid red or black covers with gold lettering, contain record coasters that say something generic like “record coasters”. The coasters are usually made of hard plastic like the Cosmopolitan one pictured here but I believe the Desmond Child ones are made of rubber.
These sets had their heyday in the 1950s with the rise of American Bandstand and all the local copycat shows.

I’m hittin’ that storage unit next time with my pound of valium as my guide!
