’50s Borden’s Milk truck still around…

Submitted by MyFunCloset August 17th, 2010

I barely remember these trucks. The milkman actually came to the door and delivered milk in quart size, glass bottles, the kind with round cardboard inserts with foil caps, putting them in an insulated box on the front steps. I don’t think milk deliveries continued into the 60’s and beyond. Also, I remember there were Borden’s Elsie the Cow ads in magazines and B&W TV too. Snapped this at an old barn type restaurant awhile back.

Yes, I think I’ve seen the trucks fairly recently but then Elsie is probably so burnt into my memory I could be hallucinating. Such a great mascot. I remember the commercials too.

We have milk delivered here in Evergreen, Colorado, from a similar truck like this every Friday morning. It comes in a glass bottle. Not Borden, but Royal Crest Dairy, which has been in business here since 1927.

We started having it delivered when all 3 of our kids were growing up, they’re all gone, but we still love having it delivered!

Is it the old fashion quart size with the cardboard insert & sealed top? Do they also deliver butter, juice or anything else? So great the tradition lives on!

I just visited the royalcrest site. Nice selection for home delivery. This answered my questions noted above.

The jug in the fridge is a heavy plastic, apparently recyclable, because we send them back. We now do 1/2 gallon size. We never had quart size, but they used to be glass sorry I totally spaced that change.
In the summer the milkman puts “snow” on top of the products in the insulated milkbox. He comes really early, like 3:30-4 am, because years ago I was up for some reason and the flashlight on the driveway scared the hell out of me. A couple months ago, my wife Cyndi broke her foot, we didn’t get our order in for a couple weeks, and he called to make sure we were okay!
