it’s not that this is the kitschiest Valentine’s Day entry I’ve seen so much as these two early Motown songs were da bomb on my 45 player and were exceedingly influential on what later blossomed into my songwriting style. Mar Well’s first hit, “Bye-Bye Baby”, is still a prototype I dip into in slinky, funky composing moods.
I love the early Motown logo. That’s rarely seen.
Strains of “The One Who Really Loves You” and “You Beat Me to the Punch” were constantly reverberating in the Willis household in the early ’60s.

You have really been teaching me (little do you know!!) to really pay attention to details when documenting kitsch. Since keeping my eye on old and obscure records, one of the first things I do is scan to each corner looking for the record label logo! I wonder why they got rid of the “car” logo for Motown…..

i like that it looks like the woman is handcufffed to the lamp post, and if you only look at the top half of the image – like when it first popped up on my screen – it actually kinds looks like she’s hanging from it. “the one who really loves you” indeed…
