I’ve seen plenty of planters that feature fowl, but this one caught my eye because the duck doesn’t look like a duck, but a cartoonist’s version of what a duck would look like. The kids thought it was creepy, but more creepy that I bought it. Happy Day. About 6 inches tall.

I would put this in the ‘adorable’ category not ‘creepy’. This kind of mini bowl/planter was popular in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. This color combo was the most popular of all. They went in kid’s rooms and, of course, remain in collectors’ rooms long past childhood. These were usually mass-produced but often times there aren’t any manufacturers’ marks on them. Many were made in China and Japan. I like this cartoon duck because he looks very kind.

Bought it at Silverlake arts crafts and vintage last Sunday when we were in town for the holiday.
I do think it took me back to things my grandparents had in the house when I was wee.
Regarding the kids and their tastes, consider that they have a life size mannequin in their living room without a head (last year the little christmas tree went where there should be a face) and hang the holiday stockings by her hands. So, different strokes…

Silverlake Arts, Crafts and Vintage is a fantastic swap meet. Fiora Boes, who runs it, also owns Ghettogloss, the gallery the opening parties for the Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch were thrown at. I think I might do a little show out of there one Saturday a month called The Kitsching Booth, kind of a poor man’s Antiques Roadshow where I appraise people’s Kitsch.
