My mother used to wear her hair like this right into the 70’s, we could never leave the house until she had backcombed and smoothed and got the maximum height with the metal end of her comb, then we would all be asphyxiated as she would single handedly destroy the ozone layer above our house..special occasions would merit the extra coils.
