Last night, I attended a CD release party for the amazing duo Super Adventure Club (that’s another post coming soon). One of their opening acts was an aptly named band called Planet Booty. Ok, I’m pretty sure this is my new favorite band (tied with Super Adventure Club). Yesterday wasn’t an easy day for me. The only way to describe it is that I was just a little extra transplanty ( a normal and mostly unpredictable fluctuation). As usual, I was exhausted, my stomach was inside out, I couldn’t see straight and was generally wrecked. After a long nap, I woke up feeling worse, but I wasn’t about to miss a night spent with one of my best friends. We had plans to go to this show, so screw it! It was completely worth it and I’m so glad I went (Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that had I been in a Turkish prison, I still would have loved the night because I was with one of the people I love most in the world, but you get it, I know you do.)
Planet Booty doesn’t seem to me to be just a band. These guys are fabulous musicians and artists. The kitsch factor is through the roof, they are brilliantly funny, their song writing is outta the stratosphere (disco, soul, pop, rock, and hip hop!) and they can really put on a show. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a front man BRING IT the way this guy did. There were costume changes, a beautiful dancing girl, some serious dance moves (including dry humping the stage floor and other moves that might make the average person blush) and plenty of booty slapping. The crowd was there to dance, the room was dripping with sweat and pit stench was the prevailing aroma. I was doing my best to not toss and am not much of a dancer these days anyway, but I can say that were I about 10 years younger, I might have been out there shakin’ it too; it was pretty hard not to.
Here is an example of the front man. He wore this hat last night which completely slayed me. I really love these guys and can I say again? THEY BRING IT!!!!!!! They are fabulous musicians and they must have been exhausted. I was tired just looking at the drummer…Go see them if you can. You won’t regret it. What a lovely bunch of people…I’m so glad they are doing what they do! have

I must be honest here. Acts like this drive me nuts, and not in the good way nuts. However, trusting your taste as I do, I would give them a shot live were they ever in LA. And the mere fact this made you feel better, in addition to the hat, makes me award this a big fat, stinky CertifiKitsch!

Hey, seriously, this is the last thing I usually have time for. In the Bay Area it’s almost a right of passage to play in some disco themed corporate gigging band. Trust me, I have NO time for it at all. In fact, I loathe everything about it. BUT, these guys caught me waaaaay off guard (am I sounding arrogant enough yet?)…
They really are great and they had a fabulous vibe. Nothing corporate about them, and not at all cheesey and vapid. These guys seem like the kinda artists that would fit right in in Willlis Wonderland….They are really smart, talented and good natured…I wish they lived next door :)
