This was taken on April 7th as I was heading down route 94 in Detroit, making my way to my hotel where I promptly unpacked, grabbed my camera and took off on foot around downtown. This roadside art was built to to support the cities love of sports, hence the football shapes you see in the middle of the sculptures.
I felt like an ant whizzing past this tire. It was massive!!
Up close shot.

The tire has been there forever and is a real symbol of Detroit. I still get a thrill when I pass it, which I’ve done at least 25,000 times. I wrote a little about it here: https://www.alleewillis.com/awmok/kitschenette/2010/08/18/allee-willis’-kitsch-o’-the-day-–-souvenir-of-detroit-shoe-and-my-love-letter-to-detroit-in-time-magazine/ I also know k2dtw has written about it and given us incredible links but for some reason I can’t locate where…
I don’t know anything about the two blue sculptures other than they either weren’t there the last time I was in Detroit in 2008 or God knows what I was doing while driving that I didn’t see them. I really like them. As they’re not holding up a bridge I’m sure there’s some story to them. Maybe our local historian, k2dtw, can illuminate?
