I picked these cuties up at a flea market many years ago. I just love their football shaped heads and the way their stripes were painted without any regard to anatomy. They don’t have any sort of markings indicating where they were manufactured (they’re also missing their corks so I’ve never used them for salt or pepper).

These are great. So oddly shaped with those wide little heads and what you stated so perfectly, that “their stripes were painted without any regard to anatomy”. This gives them a pedigree in Kitsch.
It’s probably better that you’re missing the corks as if the holes are in their heads you’d probably be shaking them forever as the salt attempted to find its way through their bodies. Though my guess is that only the head is a receptacle for the seasoning.

The holes are indeed in their heads; though the bodies are hollow, there’s a very small passage through the neck, so I think you’re right about having to shake them forever to get anything out!
