As you can tell from the photo, this “Lucky Penny” souvenir of Los Angeles is substantially larger than the real thing. It’s also so incredibly heavy that I suspect if I melted down it could pay for someone’s college education. Although it’s dated 1920 it was made in the 1960’s. I’m not quite sure what the tie in was between a penny and Los Angeles but I’ve always felt incredibly lucky to live in LA so I maybe it’s just as simple as that.

I think I’m retracting what I said in this post about this being from the 1960’s. Based on a comment someone left on my Kitsch O’ The Day blog I think it might actually be from 1920, the date on the coin. Mountain Annie wrote: “Lucky You! The ad is for a different year but 1920 Denver is mentioned.

This is absolutely a cool piece considering how I grew up in a family who loved collecting their coins! Wait til you see my “house of ill repute” token that I submitted here…..not really a coin per say, but a very cool piece. This coin looks like it came out around the time that Hollywood was “busting out” and the business was attracting people from all over. Maybe this was a tourist souvenir?
