This ostrich figurine was made by Josef Originals which produced a lot of these ceramic chotchkes in the fifties and sixties. I particularly like the expression on the face which nicely captures the indignity of being an ungainly bird with a bald head and a too-long neck.

I don’t usually like ceramics with a matte finish but you’re right that that’s an excellent facial expression. The eyeshadow’s killing me, especially accented with the eyelashes on either side of the eyes. I love that he only has a few feathers on his neck.
How tall is this bird?
Douglas Wood
About 5 1/2″ tall.
