Gaelic (?) book with scary Gnome

I found this at a library book fair – hard to believe no one else was drawn to this book in a language I cannot identify with scary gnome on the cover

Yowee! What’s going on here??? Did the young girls yank the gnome out of the tree and then not have the strength left to get the final few strands of hair out or was the gnome running past them too fast and his beard got caught in the tree? And that’s an awfully old looking gnome. Perhaps if we knew what the title meant it would provide some illumination but it all looks too scary for me. If I were the girls I would just leave the gnome stuck in the tree and head for the hills.

Could he be a leprechaun? They’re many times depicted as old men, and sometimes with red coats!

Why are they cutting his beard! Gnome domination? I love, love, love Gnomes but this guy I am not too sure about, a bit creepy. Great post!

I will find my Ladybird copy of Rumplestiltskin now he is really scary…these were books I read in my childhood and the series Well Loved Tales has some fabulous drawings. This is Snow White and Rose Red.
