Promoting a 1959 Chrysler as a comic book. Targeting the comic book readers, now that was creative. The illustrations tells a story of a road trip in a new, luxurious and spacious 1959 Chrysler sedan. This was a time of really big cars with even bigger than life personalities, and every car design had real pizzazz. Nothing safe and conservative back then. Most every brand was unique and identifiable even without a name & logo. It was a good time to drive the biggest of cars. After all, gas was just 29 cents a gallon.

Wow, I’ve never seen one of these comic books. As a lifelong collector of old cars – I still have my 1955 Studebaker and DeSotos – I’m shocked this is the first time I’m seeing this. I never owned a Chrysler but any car from 1959 is a car for me. That was the year of the biggest fins ever.

I love the slogan “The cars that CAN DO what they look like they can do!”. A little awkward but it ain’t no lie!

This is great! Every year after school started in the fall before I discovered girls, I’d watch the local car dealers for when the transports would arrive with the cars covered so no one could see the new models. Late at night they would sequester away the new models they were going to showcase that year. The showroom windows would be covered with butcher paper, and it was the most anticipated event of the year for me. The dealers had lots of terrific collateral like this for prospective buyers-and their kids and wives. Scale models of the vehicles, plastic placemats, always balloons, donuts, and coffee, but I’ve never seen this either! Notice all the cars are shown with all windows open in the “hardtop” configuration-this was before air conditioning was so common.

i like that the cover implies that they had to drive 1288 miles before they weren’t bored with their trip, the car, and/or each other.

Right you are! What were the writer thinking? In the copy, this a test drive. I think they stole the car and kept on going.
