This vanilla (what else?) flavored ice cream is lauded as “The Cream of the Stars,” although, presumably Bing’s own yet-to-be-famous off-spring were also allowed this treat after suffering their nightly beatings from pop. Wondering if there was a “Bing Cherry” flavor?

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1976 I found a proliferation of these in the thrift shops here. I don’t know how many cartons they had to have turned out in order to have a surplus but I guess Bing did better in the music business than with his dairy products. By now they’re very hard to find, especially in the good condition this one appears to be.

I wonder if any of them were ever actually packed with ice cream or whether this was one of those it was a good idea at the time but everyone lost interest before the cartons were even filled.

I love the slogan “The Cream of the Stars”. I’ve never heard an ice cream manufacturer refer to their products simply as ‘cream’.

Just wondering– were the thrift shops great back in 1976? I still check them out but it’s a rare day when I can find good stuff there anymore. Do you still frequent them here in L.A. and if so, is it productive?

i like how there’s actually no “i” in “bing” here – it really says “bmg crosby” and the little star above it tricks the eye into seeing an “i” there…

It felt awful when the current ice cream manufacturers started cutting back from gallon sizes. This is telling, this ice cream was distributed in pints.
