Almost everybody has heard of the Pet Rock. This is an original one from 1975 complete with the care and training guide. Doesn’t it look so cozy in its bed of straw.

I always refer to The Pet Rock as the quintessential Pop Culture Kitsch artifact of all time. Who would have ever thought of taking something in as unlimited supply and free no less, throwing it in a box on top of some straw and deciding they would make it something that everyone had to have? That’s what happened in 1975 to Gary Dahl, in advertising exec who was too lazy to care for a living pet. The stones, imported from Rosarito Beach in Baja California, sold for $3.95. Dahl’s only expense was the die cut boxes and the cheap 32 page manual that accompanied each little pet.

I bought my first Pet Rock the same year that I bought my first–and only–Mood Ring.
